Is TV Before Bed Bad For You?

As much as we would like to tell you that you can never have too much of a good thing, and you’re free to watch as much TV from the comfort of your bed as you like, we’d be lying. And, here at TVbed.co.uk, we want you to love your tv bed - which means it needs to be a sanctuary for sleep, as well as prime time viewing! So how do you achieve this?

Making sure you aren’t exposed to artificial lights from a screen right before bed is crucial to making sure you get a peaceful night’s sleep. Although watching TV is a great way to wind down after a long and stressful day, exposing your eyes to the glare of a screen can impact how easily you fall asleep. Press pause

Been binge watching your favourite series on Netflix and dying to know what happens next? We’ve all been there. But perhaps save your next episode for the following day and take some time to relax ‘screen free’ before your head hits the pillow. This means you can still enjoy all the benefits that TV beds have to offer without affecting how you sleep.

If you’re tempted to watch another episode, not only are you affecting the amount of sleep you’re getting but also your energy levels for the next day. The glare and “blue light” of a TV screen mirrors the sky, so your body thinks its daytime and therefore is inclined to stay awake, trust us, it’s true! This is why perhaps reading a book is a better alternative, and you can save your TV for the daytime or early evening.

What you watch can affect your sleep

Deciding watch to watch before bed is another important sleep factor, influencing your ability to switch off as well as what you dream about.

Anything that gets your heart pounding, is intense or gory, can leave you tossing and turning. If you want to wind down and make sure you get a good night’s sleep, we recommend lighter viewing such as comedies or documentaries. These give you the best chance of having an uninterrupted sleep. So, if you’re relaxing in your double TV bed and your partner suggests the latest horror before bedtime, perhaps it’s wise to suggest an alternative!

Our hormones don’t like TV at night!

It’s true! Our makeup tells us to become sleepy when it is dark, and more alert when it is light, and artificial light from the TV tricks our bodies into thinking that it’s daytime - even with the curtains shut. This means that our bodies don’t produce a hormone called melatonin that makes us drowsy and ready to drop off for the night. With this in mind, try and switch of your TV at least 30 minutes before bedtime, dim the lights, and give your body chance to recognise that it’s time to sleep.

By choosing one of our comfy TV beds for sale, and keeping these points in mind, you and your TV bed can enjoy a long, happy - and well rested - life together!
